By Kevin Koczwara Liverpool’s raid of Southampton seems to be well on its way as the Reds have reportedly offered £4 million plus add-ons for Southampton forward Rickie Lambert. The England forward is reportedly Brendan Rodgers third transfer target from Southampton. Liverpool is also reportedly interested in Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana and defender Dejan Lovren. The 32-year-old is currently warming up for the World Cup with the England squad and is preparing for England’s friendly tomorrow against Peru at Wembley. Lambert is a boyhood Liverpool fan and has been one of Southampton’s most reliable performers since helping the club back into the Premier League two seasons ago. Lambert has scored 106 goals in 207 matches for Southampton, who he joined in 2009. He was released by Liverpool as a schoolboy and had to work up through the lower leagues of English football. He previously played for Blackpool, Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers before reaching the Premier League with Southampton. Lambert will be seen as cover for Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez in the Liverpool rotation. Sturridge has been injured for stretches of time in both of the two seasons he has played for Liverpool, while Suarez, who wants to play every minute of every game, will likely need breathers as well because the demands of the Champions League and the Premier League can tire any top player. Rodgers is a known admirer of Lambert and told the media earlier this year:
“He’s probably never got the recognition for what a really good footballer he is. He is probably seen as a traditional big number nine, a typical British striker, but he’s one of the most accomplished footballers I’ve seen. Look at his touch and the different types of goals he scores; he is a terrific player.” [The Guardian]
The move does come as a surprise as Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have been known have a transfer policy that demands the team sign younger players who can develop and, if needed, be sold for a profit in the future. Earlier today Liverpool submitted a bid for Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno.
