Brendan Rodgers’ young Liverpool side took a big step on Thursday night in Italy. With a measured performance in which they kept the ball well, created chances and got the all important goal. Liverpool now move on to the round of thirty-two.Jordan Henderson slotted home following a neat layoff from Suso following a Luis Suarez header from a Stewart Downing corner. The reds domintaed much of the first half and could have went in further ahead at the break. Luis Suarez forced a good save from Padelli and Glen Johnson had the ball in the net following good work from Suarez and Downing but the latters cross came from an offside position.

Joe Allen continues to get by in games, not yet regaining the high standards he set when  he first arrived at the club. Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher marshalled the back four superbly and Jonjo Shelvey showed his progress in anther good performance.

The second half was largely devoid of excitement except for a chance that fell to Suso from a Suarez lay off but the young Spaniard blazed over with his right foot. Antonio Di Natale set Liverpool hearts racing near the end when through on goal on the right but managed to shoot over from a promising angle following carelessness by Liverpool in midfield.

Qualification achieved and young players continue to grow. Rodgers will hope investment comes in the January transfer window to add some much-needed depth and firepower to a squad devoid of both.
