Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle – Suarez Magic Saves Redmen

By Jonathan Carroll

In an all too familair story, Liverpool supporters saw their team play the better football, dominate possession, out shoot their opponents and once again leave with less than three points.

Yohan Cabaye scored with Newcastle’s first shot on target just before half-time. It was a fantastic finish none the less with his right foot that left Brad Jones with no chance. It was a first half of few noteworthy chances. Luis Suarez had a stinging shot saved by Tim Krul in a game that Steven Gerrard played his 600th game for Liverpool.

The second half saw Brendan Rodgers men come out with a more adventurous approach. Unlike the first half there was support for Suarez up front. Raheem Sterling, Nuri Sahin, Suso and Gerrard all making forward forays.

Jose Enrique’s long ball in the 67th minute was controlled effortlessly by Suarez on his chest, with a swivel of his hips he sent the keeper to ground and proceeded to tap home Liverpool’s equalizer. It was a goal of the highest calibre. The Uruguayan has come under a lot of criticism from some parts of the press and also from others around the league but his class cannot be denied by even those who claim to hate him.

Suarez proceeded to set up Jonjo Shelvey who should have scored when six yards out from goal. Shelvey also had a great chance to win it late from Enrique’s cross but headed straight at Krul.

Tough times to be a red but with a run of positive results into January lets hope Brendan Rodgers will get sufficient financial backing from Fenway Sports Group to help his team take shape that bit quicker. Huge positives exist such as the development of Sterling, Suso, Andre Wisdom at a very young age. Add tot hat the fact Lucas Leiva, Luis Suarez, Joe Allen, Jonjo Shelvey are twenty-five or under and its plain to see with a few quality additions, notably a striker, Liverpool will start turning those draws into wins.
