Liverpool 2-3 Udinese – Lapses Cost Reds

By Jonathan Carroll

Brendan Rodgers left a few of his first team regulars on the bench for the Europa League game against Udinese at Anfield on Thursday night. In what was another dominating performance for the most part, the Reds paid the price for some lazy defending and lapses in concentration.

It all started well with Jonjo Shelvey further adding to his account by heading in the opener after a promising start by the home team. Liverpool failed to build on their superiority in the first half and they would be punished as the game went on.

Udinese looked a totally different team in the second half. Pressuring high up the pitch, forcing the play, getting numbers forward. Very un-Italian like away from home especially. Liverpool were caught giving too much time and space most notably Jamie Carragher and Sebastian Coates over the course of the game. Antonio Di Natale started the comeback with a well taken goal for the Italian side just thirty-two seconds into the second half. Two more goals in quick succession by Sebastian Coates (own goal) and a low driven effort by Giovanni Pasquale put Udinese up 3-1 on the night.

Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard were soon introduced and Suarez duly curled home a fantastic free-kick after seventy-five minutes to make it 2-3. Raheem Sterling was later introduced to the action to add some extra pace to the attack. Neither Suarez or Sterling could take any of the chances created in the last fifteen minutes.

A disappointing result, especially at home against a decent side. Some lacklustre defending was most notable on the night. Liverpool again created a lot of chances logging sixteen shots on target to Udinese’s five. The finishing touch again deserted them in a game they dominated for the most part. With Stoke at home this weekend the defending will be tested out fully by the visiting sides physicality and their love for set pieces.
