Young Boys 3-5 Liverpool

By Jonathan Carroll

Brendan Rodgers young charges showed the first team how to finish on Thursday night in Switzerland with an impressive attacking performance. Jordan Henderson, Jonjo Shelvey, Andre Wisdom and Jesus Fernandez Saez impressed before Sundays game at Anfield versus Manchester United.

While some of the defending on show was suspect to say the least, the character shown from a young Liverpool side to overturn a 3-2 deficit and go on to win 5-3 shows the academy may just be headed in the right direction. Summer signing Oussama Assaidi looked dangerous on the wing and youngster “Suso” showed glimpses of why he was regarded so highly at Barcelona.

Stewart Downings cross from the by line in the first half was headed into his own net by Juhani Ojala in comical circumstances. Andre Wisdom powered home Nuri Sahin’s corner to put the reds 2-1 up. From there Liverpool fell behind but further goals from Sebastian Coates and an impressive brace from Shelvey helped see Liverpool gain three points.

With Liverpool’s poor start in the league, Brendan Rodgers will look to use more of his younger players in the Europa League to allow his first team players some additional rest before the weekend league fixtures. Whereas the transfer window may have been a failure in the eyes of a lot of Liverpool supporters, the promise being shown by Jonjo Shelvey (20), Suso (18), Wisdom (19), Coates (21) and Henderson (22) shows that there is emerging talent at the club. An out and out striker should still be a priority for the club in January’s transfer window but if Rodgers can get some of his other midfielders to get forward in the same fashion as Shelvey did Thursday night Liverpool might be able to cope until January.
