By Sam Mathius

It’s a term that’s thrown around liberally: modern football. The combination of technology, sporting affinity, and globalization are its hallmarks. However, so are the egotistical superstar, astronomical transfer fees, and skyrocketing salaries. The game is now a business, like it or not. Continue reading

Lucas Leiva barely got to feel the grass underneath his cleats in August for Liverpool before tearing his thigh muscle in what was suppose to be his triumphant and much anticipated return after a lengthy and greuling injury-recovering period. It wasn’t. Lucas had to come off because of injury in Liverpool’s second game of the season, which was against the reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City.

It was not what Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool supporters wanted to see. Red Sox CEO Lucchino says Henry and Werner’s biggest concern is baseball success

By Kevin Koczwara

Larry Lucchino is the president and CEO of the Boston Red Sox, and he’s part of the ownership group that makes up The Fenway Sports Group, which owns not only the Red Sox but also Liverpool FC, Roush Racing and NESN. Lucchino has never wavered from his support of the Red Sox or his love of baseball. He hasn’t had too much to say in regards to the ownership groups other properties, namely Liverpool. He’s always been front and center with all of the ownership team’s baseball operations, so when he came out today and told Boston.com readers that the Red Sox were front and center for principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner it was of little surprise in Boston.

But it could be read the wrong way with Liverpool sitting mid-table in the Premier League and its manager struggling with a thin squad.

3-4-1-2: Brendan Rodgers Alternate Formation?

By Bill Farnham

With the recent injuries to Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly, will Brendan Rodgers consider changing Liverpool’s formation from his favored 4-3-3?

The upcoming Premier League fixtures are an interesting mix, with Newcastle and Wigan coming to Anfield, while Liverpool will travel to Goodison Park, Stamford Bridge, the Liberty Stadium and White Hart Lane before the end of November, meaning that the Reds will play four teams that can all claim to have Champions League ambitions in addition to several relegation candidates. Rodgers will need to field the strongest possible line-up for the matches against Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton. With recent injuries in mind, there is an argument to be made that a 4-3-3 is not the optimal formation.
